During two days the authors of 28 presentations discussed in the city of Antofagasta, mining capital of Chile, the recent advances and applications of geological sciences in the mining industry.

GEOMIN 2009 can be considered to be a unique event because of the first term character of this seminar: Never before, a seminar had been organised in Chile that was focussed so strongly on the contribution and development of geological sciences in mining operations.

The enthusiastic participation of professionals was met with great interest of the almost 200 delegates from Chile, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Canada, USA and other countries. Among the delegates were high ranking business executives, academics, engineers and specialists in various areas, such as Geostatistics, Geotechnics, Geometallurgy and Geomechanics. Representatives of all major mining companies, engineering and consulting companies, equipment and services providers, and universities, research centers and NGOs participated in GEOMIN 2009.

With great success, the First International Seminar on Geology for the Mining Industry, Geomin 2009, has been organised from 10-12 June 2009, at the Hotel Enjoy de Antofagasta, Chile . This event was organised specifically for geologists and related professionals, active in the mining industry, specifically in mining operations. The Seminar was sponsored by National Prestigious Institutions as the Consejo Minero, SONAMI, Colegio de Geólogos de Chile and SERNAGEOMIN, also by International Institutions like the Society of Economic Geologists, USA , and the WH Bryan Geology- Mining Research Centre from the University of Queensland , Australia .

GEOMIN 2009 had a total of almost 200 delegates , mostly geologists, mining engineers and metallurgy engineers, representing some of the most important mining companies, consulting agencies, universities and research centres in Chile and abroad, such as Argentina , Brazil , Canada , Spain , Peru and the United States . There were also 40 students from different Chilean universities .

GEOMIN 2009 had one Keynote Speaker, 4 Plenary Sessions and 21 Oral Presentations on Geotechnics, Geomechanics, Exploration and Geological Modelling, Geometallurgy, Mineralogy, Geostatistics and Mining Geology.

There were also two Previous Short Courses, one on Geometallurgy: Introduction and Applications in Exploration and Production”, given by the Society of Economic Geologists, that had more than 60 participants. The second Short Course, "Sampling and Quality Control in Exploration and Mining”, was given by Eduardo Magri and Antoni Magri, and had over 50 delegates.

The main Geomin 2009 objectives were:

  • Exchange experiences and knowledge
  • Identify and analyse best practices
  • Generate a support network for professionals related to geology in the Mining Industry.

The Organising Committee would like to express its gratitude for the collaboration of all Authors, Session Chairmen, Delegates, Members of the Advisory and Technical Committees and the Sponsoring Companies for their contribution and participation, and for their knowledge and expertise in geology and in the applications of geological sciences in the mining industry.

The community of geologists, mining engineers and metallurgical engineers that met during GEOMIN 2009, is invited to maintain its enthusiasm and to participate in the next version of this seminar, GEOMIN 2011.
